Biography of the artist
Debra Babcock
I am a freelance, self-taught artist that began drawing at a very early age. Dogs and animals were my main subjects as they were my constant fascination. I started out doing pen & ink and charcoal drawings. It wasn't until High School art classes that I learned to use color. Color opened up a new world of possibilities. I've done Charcoal and pastel portraits but I now mostly work with acrylics in bringing my chosen images to life.
I’m especially fond of depicting animals and nature. Capturing the essence and likeness of an animal or someone’s beloved pet is very rewarding to me. I’ve drawn and painted commissioned pet portraits for the last several years. I also enjoy painting flowers, and close-ups of interesting subjects. I often take photos to capture images in different lighting situations. Whether working from real life or using photos for resource material, continuing to learn and improve my craft is my goal.
In my creative process, I will usually work from a photograph. It's important to have good picture so I can readily see the subject’s true colors. I use whatever techniques and materials I think will best bring about the effect I want. Sometimes it’s the strong contrast between light and shadow that I want to focus on. I enjoy bringing out the many shifts in color and value that result from strong light illuminating forms. Other times, I may be drawn to the mood I feel the subject evokes. The amount of details in my work also varies. Sometimes I strive for a very realistic portrayal; other times I use a more Impressionist approach. For me, the joy of making art is in the challenge of using composition, shape, and color to bring about an interesting or perhaps dramatic painting. The process of painting is very gratifying to me and I like to think that my images are uplifting, because that is what attracts me to art.
It’s my hope that something about my art connects with those who view it!
I live in the beautiful Tennessee valley with my husband, two dogs and five acres. I'm always planting and growing different kinds of trees and plants. This way, I have plenty of subject matter to inspire me. Along with my great family and friends, my Toy Poodle "Tiffany" and my Yorkshire Terrier "Travis" continually inspire me.
Thanks for your interest in my art!
Things to consider when commissioning a painting:
1) Canvas size: Most people don't go much larger than a 12 x 16. 8 x 10 and 9 x 12 are the most popular. The largest I've ever painted is 24" by 20". Larger canvas is available if you are interested.
2) Composition: When choosing a picture you want a good, clear shot of the face. I feel the soul of a pet rests in their eyes, so the closer the better. Even though I have painted dogs sleeping and they turned out super sweet. Be creative with your pictures. If your pet is a lab maybe a photo of him in the water or catching a frisbee. If your pet is a cat, try a “playing with a toy” shot. A squeaker toy of some kind usually will get their attention and make for that unique personality only your pet has.
*Please keep in mind unless agreed upon, the painting is of your pet and not the surroundings. For example: A pet sitting beside a basket of flowers or a pet sniffing a “detailed” flower is much more expensive with the flower(s) detail included.

To order:
Include what size and type of canvas you would like.
When not using 1/2" stretched canvas I often use Professional Canvas Artist Sheets. The sheets allow the painting to be put in a traditional frame. You can request either surface. A stretched canvas is already on a wood frame and can be hung by itself or displayed on an easel. You may also want to consider having it professionally framed. Once we have determined Canvas, Canvas size, subject & composition, I will give you the cost of the painting. You are then ready at that point to place your order.
When ordering a commissioned painting, please allow 2 - 3 weeks for completion. Depending on the size and the composition. It can take less time and sometimes a little longer but that's not usually the case.
